The competition is fierce when it comes to winning the battle for favourite arm candy of the cool-girl set, and right now a stylish Frenchman is winning hands down. The designer in question? Jerome Dreyfuss.
Take a look at his current collection of festival-friendly mini-bags and office-appropriate totes and you'll see why. Jerome's slouchy leather and canvas bags are the epitome of the polished boho vibe beloved of girls from LA to Paris, and the hard-to-please fashion editors have been won over too. Over the past year or two we’ve even seen the likes of Diane Kruger , Naomi Watts, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jessica Biel toting his offerings, and now, it seems, us Brits are at last catching on.
So who is the sartorialy savvy man behind the coveted creations? Jerome kick-started his career when he was just 17, working first as an assistant to John Galliano and then for Elite models. But the design world beckoned, and in 1998 he launched his own label and was quickly hailed as the Next Big Thing, compared to Jean Paul Gaultier and awarded the coveted Andam award . And he had other projects on the go at the same time - alongside wowing the world’s fashion press with his creations, Jerome also worked as a stylist, dressing, amongst others, Michael Jackson for album shoots.
In 2002 Jerome decided to shutter his ready-to-wear line and launch the bag line for which we all now know him. Slowly but surely he built up a cult following amongst the most stylish girls in Paris, and over the past few years his popularity has spread across the globe - his Paris store has become a must-visit for those in the know . Fashion fans love his luxe-meets-laid-back offerings, and Jerome knows it - from Billie to Carlos, he names each of his bags after men, such constant companions are they.
In the past few years he has opened a boutique in New York. And, like his Paris store, the Big Apple outlet is located right around the corner from that of another uber-cool Paris designer - Isabel Marant . It's no coincidence. The pair are, in fact, married, surely France's most stylish and hip fashion power couple. We're keeping our fingers tightly crossed that their next move on the route to world domination involves a matching pair of stores in London...
