Belgian designer Olivier Theyskens is at long last making his come back - and it's with a much-coveted collection for American label Theory.
Olivier Theyskens is one of those designers that the fashion crowd talks about with awe. Thanks to the theatrical, fairytale dresses that the Belgian wunderkind created during his tenure at the House of Rochas and the chicly casual revolution that he undertook at Nina Ricci, he is revered by those in the know.
But it’s fair to say that he’s had some bad luck on the job front. The house of Rochas closed while he was creative director – with prices starting at $20,000 the clientele was too exclusive and not enough money was being made. And Theyskens was famously let go from his position at Nina Ricci after just three seasons thanks to a difference in opinion with the label’s president.
Ever since then rumours have consistently swirled about where Theyskens would end up next – his name has been mentioned in conjunction with Dior, Valentino, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent to name but a few. But after a year off the radar he finally took up a job offer – and his choice came as a big surprise to many. Instead of heading to one of the major fashion houses Theyskens opted to team up with American brand Theory.
Initially he created a spring capsule collection for them, set to hit stores in the next month or two. When it was unveiled at Paris Fashion Week back in September it was all anyone could talk about on the front row. It’s perfectly simple, a collection of luxe, chic, classic pieces that will fit seamlessly into your wardrobe. In fact, we’re pretty sure you’ll want the collection to be your wardrobe. There are slouchy wide legged trousers and full length skirts, sharp tailoring, cool silk and jersey T-shirts and flippy summer dresses and shifts. Trust us, Thesykens has nailed your working wardrobe in style.
His creations were such a hit that he was offered a permanent job at Theory, which he duly accepted. Theyskens is now the artistic director, overseeing the men’s, women’s and accessories collections as well as continuing his own capsule collection - and we're very much looking forward to letting him dress us for the forseeable future.
