Vestiaire Collective is Europe’s leading online marketplace for curated pre-owned and luxury products. The collective brainchild of a group of six influencers, including two fashion-savvy French women, Fanny Moizant and Sophie Hersan, it was launched in Paris in 2009. Six years on, it boasts over three million members from 40 countries all over the world. We’ve invited Sophie and Fanny into the #ELLEFashionCupboard to introduce us to Vestiaire Collective and tell us their story.
What was the inspiration behind the site?
The key word for our business is trust. That was lacking in resale fashion at the time – people were wary about buying luxury brands online. We authenticate everything that comes through the site and in 2012 we signed a charter against counterfeit goods with the luxury fashion houses. Our customers know they can trust what they’re buying, which allows them to engage and just enjoy the whole process.
Is that the secret of your success?
Vestiaire Collective has a very active and engaged community of buyers and sellers. We always listen to the community. We launched in the UK, for example, because of the demand from users here.
How does the UK market differ from elsewhere?
UK shoppers are the most advanced when it comes to ecommerce and tech –well over half our UK members shop from a mobile device. They are much more adventurous; they love getting new experiences, exploring new things.
Do they buy the same labels as French shoppers?
We see more sales of British designers – as you would expect! Stella McCartney and Erdem, for example, are popular; also, mid-range French brands, such as Maje and Sandro. But the top labels are the same everywhere: Ch
