There are few fashion figures as well loved as master cobbler Manolo Blahnik, so news that he is to get his own documentary is very welcome indeed.
The 73-year-old is to be the subject of ‘Manolo (The Boy Who Made Shoes For Lizards)’, directed by Michael Roberts, a long-time friend of the designer’s.
Roberts has a background as a filmmaker, photographer, stylist, illustrator, author and journalist. He was also the man behind ‘Grace, Thirty Years of Fashion at Vogue’, a documentary about Grace Coddington, and co-author of her accompanying memoir, ‘Grace’.
“Having known Manolo for over 30 years, I can say he is a multifaceted intellectual and romantic whose engaging mind and ingenious work is made for entertaining cinema,” said Roberts in a press release.
In case you’re confused by the title, it’s taken from a short film currently featured on Manolo’s website, also directed by Roberts, which shows "Manolo as a little boy running around the gardens of his hometown in the Canary Islands obsessed with making shoes for the little reptiles out of candy wrappers. One can easily see where Manolo’s love of nature and botany comes from and how they always permeate his designs."
Roberts has already worked on a number of short films for Blahnik, which can be viewed on the brand's YouTube page.
Blahnik moved to the UK in the Sixties and currently resides in Bath, Somerset.
