Erin Wasson
Erin Wasson is one of the ever-growing breed of models who are not content to simply strutt their stuff on the international catwalks, and to date she can add the words stylist, muse, jewellery designer and now fashion designer to her C.V.
This 26 year old Texan started her career in 1999 when she won a model search competition and swiftly kick started her career in fashion with appearances on the catwalk for Costume National, Balenciaga and Givenchy. Since then she’s racked up endless runway miles, appeared on the cover of French Vogue, Esquire, British Harper’s Bazaar and Allure, and been picked as the face of Balenciaga, Karl Lagerfeld’s range for H&M, D&G, Victoria’s Secret and Michael Kors to name but a few.
Then, proving that fashion really is a small world, she struck up a friendship with neighbour and up-and-coming designer Alexander Wang. They bonded in the lift of the building where they lived, discovered that they both had a similar approach to fashion and Erin became his muse, inspiration and, before long, show stylist. After two seasons working as a team to put together the looks, this September saw Erin backstage in a slightly different incarnation; this time around she was draping the models in body jewellery from her own line, Low Luv. Her chunky and tribal-inspired chains and long necklaces have become much sought after, despite a brief controversy when it was alleged that she had taken just a little too much inspiration from the designs of fellow jewellery designer Bliss Lau.
Now Miss Wasson is set to expand her repertoire even further with a collection designed for street and skate brand RVCA (pronounced roo-ka). The collaboration is a perfect match; Erin is much admired for her laid back, understated and effortlessly cool style. Her wardrobe staples are denim cut-offs and slouchy vests teamed with hippy-ish head bands, and she confesses to a love of vintage pieces and a much-channelled tomboy side - as a rule she prefers to shop in the men’s rather than women’s department. Her collection promises to be the embodiment of her trademark look, with the focus on basic pieces that are accessible to all and that will slip easily into any girl's wardrobe, whether you choose to team them with an old pair of shorts or a Balenciaga jacket.
The range is due to hit stores in January but, sadly for us, will only be available Stateside for now. Nonetheless we think that you should keep an eye on Erin Wasson – we’re pretty sure we haven’t heard the last of her yet.
