Moises de la Renta
The surname of Moises de la Renta will no doubt be familiar to you and no wonder – fashion’s latest rising star is the son of fashion legend Oscar de la Renta, and he’s started to follow in his father’s footsteps.
Moises’ beginnings are like something out of a film script. He was found abandoned in a skip in Dominica and taken by nuns to a nearby orphanage. Soon after, the recently widowed Oscar heard about him and decided to adopt him. And so Moises grew up surrounded by the trappings of one of the world’s greatest fashion labels. Surprisingly his decision to join the industry himself has only been taken recently. He spent two years studying Communications at Marymount Manhattan College before dropping out and taking up an internship at Phat Farm. He then moved to his father’s studio to work as an assistant (frankly we can’t think of a better way to learn the trade), where he designed some T-shirts that featured in the show and became one of the hits of the collection.
Now Moises is striding out on his own. The first collection from his label, MDLR, has launched along with one of the coolest websites we’ve seen for a long time. The look is simple, easy to wear and effortlessly cool – the sleeveless leather jacket and subtly spotted hoody are sure to be a hit with America’s hip young things, and there are also a couple of incredibly chic dresses and a classic black blouse that will have a broader appeal. As for the face of the label, Moises roped in friend and muse Lissy Trulli (former model and lead singer of her eponymous band) to model the range for the look book.
The collection has already caused a stir amongst the fashion press and buzz is already building around the S/S10 collection. Sadly for us the autumn collection will only be available to buy in the States - here’s hoping that it gets picked up over here come spring.
