Angelica Huston

Mention Angelica Huston and most of you will probably think of Morticia Adams, or perhaps her (truly terrifying) role in The Witches. But are you aware of what a genuine style icon she really is? And how many of fashion’s movers and shaker’s have been influenced by her look over the years? We thought not. Let us enlighten you.

The daughter of director John Huston and ballerina Enrica Soma, Angelica made her first appearance on the fashion scene at the age of 15 when she was shot by David Bailey, a friend of her father. The iconic photographer went on to shoot her hundreds of times, predominately for French Vogue, in some of the most landmark fashion photos of the decade. Most notably she took part with him in an epic road trip across the Italian Riviera, being styled by Grace Coddington and shot alongside non other than Manolo Blahnik. This year Bailey released a coffee table book, ‘Is That So Kid’, that brought together his favourite pictures of her – there are plenty to choose from.

Bailey is not the only man who was inspired by Angelica. When she was in her late teens she dated Bob Richardson (father of Terry) and was photographed many times by him. She was shot by controversial photographer Guy Bourdin, and worked many times with iconic fashion photographer Helmut Newton during the seventies.

And then of course there are her film roles – Morticia Adams, The Grand High Witch, Etheline Tenenbaum - these days her fashion status comes less from her modelling shots and more from her stylised characters. Since her role in the Adam’s Family she has been the go-to-girl for gothic glamour, making her the perfect style icon for this season. Statuesque with long dark hair and imposing features she is undeniably beautiful – so do your best to channel her this winter as you reach for yet another dramatic black outfit from your wardrobe.
