Azzedine Alaia
This year Azzedine Alaia celebrates 50 years in fashion and the label is officially back on the radar. Crowned as the 'King of Cling' in the 80s, sculpture student Alaia’s signature look was skin-tight, sculpted lycra, worn by everyone from Naomi Campbell to Madonna, via Tina Turner and Cindy Crawford. But with the arrival of 90s minimalism, all those bandage-tight cocktail dresses fell out of style. Until now. The look has crept back into our fashion consciousness with Marc Jacobs, Helmut Lang and Narciso Rodriguez all taking inspiration from the acclaimed designer, while Christopher Kane and Marios Schwab have paid homage to Alaia’s creations in the past two seasons, bringing high-octane body con to a new generation. And of course, when the fashion pack fall in love, the stars follow. Cue Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, and Alaia’s muse, Naomi Campbell, who have all been spotted out and about in a mix of new and vintage Alaia looks. For A/W07 the designs have moved on, with the addition of feminine ruffles and lace, and will be available for the first time at Matches and Browns. The ‘King of Cling’ is back with a vengeance - see you at the gym.
