Miley Cyrus' Latest (Fashion) Statement

Peace, love and rap

You can say what you like about Miley Cyrus, but our one-time ELLE cover star certainly knows how to make a statement.

With all eyes on her after that MTV VMA performance as she strode the red carpet at last night’s MTV Europe Music Awards in Amsterdam, she took the opportunity to put out a message of peace in a lace-through micro-mini dress emblazoned with pictures of gone-too-young rappers The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur.

The message? ‘Please stop the violence.’

While the sentiment might have been wholesome, the cut wasn’t – and it’s a far cry from Miley’s younger days, as our writer Janice Turner discovered when she interviewed Miley (and her co-manager, chaperone and mom, Tish) for our June issue.

‘Miley was 14, at the height of her TV fame, and wanted to go to a ‘meet and greet’ with fans in a skimpy crop top. Tish told her to go get changed. Miley refused. A row ensued,’ wrote Turner. ‘Eventually, a surly Miley complied but when she returned, Tish grounded her.’

Of course, Miley’s transformation from Disney teen to powerful young woman in charge of her own destiny is well-enough documented.

But as for her devoted fans wanting to emulate her latest look… The dress was custom-made vintage. The boots, though, were Tom Ford.
