His illustrious career has witnessed myriad metamorphoses, both in terms of his musical output and his inimitable style. His eponymous V&A retrospective became the museum’s fastest-selling show to date, and his wickedly eccentric brand of creativity has inspired countless fashion shoots.

It comes as little surprise then, that David Bowie has been awarded the accolade of best-dressed Briton in history in a poll by BBC History Magazine. Winning the title with 48.5 per cent of the votes, Bowie beat a number of imposing monarchs, duchesses and dandies to the post.

The award is the most recent indication of Bowie’s unwaning appeal. Just a few weeks ago, ELLE reported that Bowie is to become the latest face of ’s forthcoming ‘L’Invitation au Voyage’ campaign.

It's clear that whatever persona he assumes or shakes off – Ziggy Stardust, Thin White Duke, Aladdin Sane – David Bowie continues to enthral.
