Earlier in the year, it was announced that Rita Ora would be embarking on a collaboration with sports giant, adidas for their AW14 Originals line. And of course, excitement was rife at the knowledge that our sports gears would get a much-needed reboot from the fashion maven (and former ELLE cover star) herself.

With the 'Black' collection out last month; the 'Pastel' and 'Colourblock' collection out today, and the 'Roses' and 'Spray' pieces out on 1 November - we chatted to the singer about her exciting step forward into the fashion world.

ELLE: So tell us about the collaboration…

RO: It’s been a journey, and I’ve actually been directly involved in the process because I love clothes and fashion. I’m so grateful that the fashion world has welcomed me with open arms, and the designers that I’ve met are just so unreal; I’ve learned a lot from them. Jeremy Scott has been one of them; he’s been with adidas for over 10 years and really helped me out.

ELLE: How did you want the collection to come across?

RO: I had to narrow it down to what I wanted it to represent: freedom, femininity, and being really proud of my independence as a woman - women shouldn’t have to feel frumpy in sports gear.

ELLE: What was your inspiration?

RO: My tattoos, where I’ve been in the world, my obsession with raving. Basically it’s just a story. It’s a journey and there’s so much more to come next year. This is just the start.

ELLE: What’s your favourite piece?

RO: The leather bomber. You can feel the quality, and my tattoos are on there.

ELLE: Describe the design process in five words

RO: Long. Inspiring. Evolution. Massive growth.

ELLE: Have you given much thought to what you’d like for the next collection?

RO: There will be a lot of eastern and oriental influences - it will take into account my love for kimonos and everything bright and bold.

ELLE: Was it hard putting a twist on adidas originals – a brand that’s so well-loved and iconic?

RO: I’m the first woman designer since Missy Elliot, and being alongside male collaborators such as Pharrell and Kanye West has made me feel really powerful. My main priority was thinking, would the women who worked at adidas wear it?

ELLE: Is there anyone you’d love to see wearing the collection?

RO: Beyoncé has worn it, and Ariana Grande wore it recently on stage. I was so happy because I love her, and being a musician and having that support from other musicians, it’s the nicest feeling.
