There’s just something about a man in leathers, isn’t there? Picture him. Now imagine that he is David Beckham, and you’re standing a foot away from him having a chat, and you’re probably close to feeling how ELLE was feeling when we found ourselves in that very situation last night.

It’s all Belstaff’s fault. As we reported yesterday, we’d suspected that David Beckham was not only going to be guest of honour at the brand’s long-awaited, star-studded boutique opening on London’s Old Bond Street, but also be named as its new signing into the bargain.

Turns out, we were right: the next phase of Becks’ career will see him step into a Steve McQueen-inspired campaign, shot by Peter Lindburgh, as the international face of the brand.

And, although he didn’t ride in the motorbike cavalcade (witnessed by fellow guests David Gandy, Pixie Lott, Edie Campbell and Otis Ferry) that marked the spectacular launch, Becks - who practically broke the internet when ELLE featured him emerging from a swimming pool topless on our cover last year - did tell us that he loves being on his bike because it’s the closest thing he feels to ‘freedom’.

‘I love the freedom. When you're out there, nobody knows it’s you,’ he confided. ‘You have a full-face helmet on. I enjoy just being alone, or with friends, riding. It’s the freedom part more than anything.’

Not that wife Victoria shares his enthusiasm for feeling the wind in her hair.

‘She’s never ridden with me, and I don’t think she will,’ he laughed. ‘Obviously, with four children, trying to get her on the bike is difficult.’

If you ever need someone to ride pillion, David, you know where we are...
