What do Margaret Thatcher, Queen Elizabeth, Coco Chanel and Lady Gaga have in common? Chances are, you recognise their signature style as well as their cultural influence.

It's a subject the Design Museum seeks to highlight in its new exhibition, Women Fashion Power – promising an exploration clothing, photography, interviews and archive footage into the ‘sophisticated visual language’ used by women as a form of self expression and social definition.

Comments fashion critic Colin McDowell, ‘This exhibition shows how women have used different approaches to dress in order to make statements which are unique to them and their personalities. Few of the women in this exhibition would see themselves as fashion plates or even strong fashion followers.

'They create their own wardrobes, not to be fashion plates but to demonstrate who and what they are.’

Dame Vivienne Westwood and Browns founder Joan Burstein are also in the mix. The full Women Fashion Power list will be revealed in August, ahead of the exhibition launch in October.
