Fashion Olympics anyone?

The cruise season literally heated up in Brazil yesterday as Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquière showed an appropriately sporty and futuristic collection in the run-up to the Rio Olympics. If the 2016 Fashion Games were an actual thing, one could imagine the competitors wearing looks such as the hyper-graphic, spliced dresses and separates on show. And with other major houses such as Chanel, Dior and Gucci all traveling to similarly grande locations to show resort, the season is in fact looking like a contest of sorts, with the competition not just happening in the clothes, but show experience, cultural references and sheer Instagrammability.

Held at the famous Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum,  Ghesquière's collection was meant to honour the city and two of its iconic painters, Helio Oiticica and Aldemir Martins. 'In Rio de Janeiro, what I saw most of all was movement and an explosive energy that lives somewhere between modernism and tropicality,'  Ghesquière said in a press statement. 'I was fascinated by the constant duality between nature and urbanism and the pictorial explosion it creates. For me, the main question was how to incorporate into my collection all these elements that are part of Brazilian culture, without forgetting that I am just a visitor who brings his own Parisian and French cultural references to the moment.'

2) The dresses were as spacey as the fantastical flying saucer shaped venue

'I so admire the power of Oscar Niemeyer's conviction. His vision, his radicality, his utopia even. Being able to show a fashion collection in such an architecturally powerful space is a sensorial experience,'  Ghesquière said of the museum where the show was held.
