Balenciaga’s new cinematic vision

First ad under Wang is unveiled

Alexander Wang’s ‘cinematic’ vision of Balenciaga is translated in black and white in his first ad campaign as creative director.

The powerful, spare, darkly dramatic image released by the house today was shot by Steven Klein – and bestowed ‘with lots of emotion, in contrast to the austerity bestowed in the show,’ Wang explained to WWD.

Kristen McMenamy is the girl in front of the lens – not that you’d know, given that her face is hidden, with the focus entirely on ‘craft, detail and texture’ of the clothes shown.

The clamour to be runway-side as Wang’s first collection for the French fashion powerhouse was unveiled at Paris Fashion Week in February was phenomenal, with ELLE’s editor-in-chief Lorraine Candy hailing the edit as ‘a powerful statement’.

Look out for the campaign breaking in the June editions.

The new issue of ELLE goes on sale tomorrow, 1 May.
