To celebrate Pride Month, Nike cast transgender vogue artist and ballroom dancer Leiomy Maldonado in a new video campaign for its #BeTrue collection. It's the second Nike commercial to feature a transgender athlete after Chris Mosier, the first transgender man to earn a spot on the U.S. men's national team, starred in a video campaign last August.

It's a pivotal move for Nike, after the sportswear brand received flack for supporting President Donald Trump during his campaign (more than 60,000 people signed a petition urging Nike to #DumpTrump and to not renew the flagship store's lease at Midtown's Trump Tower). The decision to include a transgender woman of color is part of a larger initiative by Nike to be inclusive; other ads in the brand's #Equality campaign include a commercial featuring women athletes in hijabs.

The video celebrates voguing, a dance move predominantly performed by queer and transgender people of color in 1960's Harlem (and brought into the mainstream by Madonna in 1990), and stars Maldonado, who made history as the first transgender woman to appear on MTV's America's Best Dance Crew in 2009. Maldonado is seen training other dancers in a studio and performing on the city streets while an emotional voiceover by Precious Angel Ramirez asks questions like, "What did you do to make a mark on this world? What mountains did you climb? Which angels gave you their wings?" The video not only showcases Maldonado's athletic prowess but also promotes a powerful message of self-acceptance in the LGBTQ community.

Directed by Daisy Zhou, the ad pays homage to New York City's "ballroom scene" and Black and Latino LGBTQ youth and already has a fan in Laverne Cox, who reposted and shared the video on Instagram. "There's so much to post and share this week, the girls are doing big things, trans folks are stepping forward with talent, vision and determination and I love you all," she wrote.
