It shouldn’t happen to a fashion editor.

Milan Fashion Week is an opportunity for the style set to show off their new season – read spring – purchases, but freezing temperatures have quickly put paid to that. And nowhere more so than south of the ankle.

Never before seen at the shows, the welly has officially usurped the pointed heel as the front row footwear of choice.

‘We're witnessing a shoe crisis!’ reports editor-in-chief Lorraine Candy. ‘White stilettos are the main spring trend and they were out in force on day one, but the Arctic blast has prompted a welly boot parade.’

‘I've seen lace-ups, full on ski boots and some rather impressive lace and leather ones so far!’

The average temperature for February in the city is between three and a positively balmy eight degrees but today it’s set to plummet as low as minus one, with constant rain (if you’ll pardon the pun) to boot.

It could be worse, though – at least it’s not snowing.

That’s tomorrow’s forecast...
