Gaspard Ulliel to play Yves Saint Laurent

Chanel model wins the role

Glamour, genius and rivalry at the disco: the Paris fashion scene of the 1960s and ‘70s had all the makings of a blockbuster movie. So it’s fitting that filmmakers are preparing to bring the life story of Yves Saint Laurent, of one of the era’s main players, to the big screen.

Saint Laurent is the subject of a forthcoming biopic directed by France’s Bertrand Bonello. And Bonello has found his Yves: Gaspard Ulliel, a 27-year-old French actor, won the role after a ‘huge’ audition process.

The role represents a breakthrough for Ulliel, who may be more recognisable as the face of Chanel’s Bleu de Chanel fragrance than as an actor (though he did play the young Hannibal Lecter in 2007’s Hannibal Rising.)

The film will focus on Saint Laurent’s rise to prominence in the ‘60s and early ‘70s, leading to his landmark Russian collection in 1976.

Bonello isn’t the only filmmaker with his eye on Saint Laurent—Jalil Lespert is also working on a biopic of the designer. Lespert may not have a lanky dreamboat of a lead like Ulliel (that we know of), but he does have the support of Pierre Berge, Saint Laurent’s partner.

Do we sense a new rivalry brewing? And what would Karl Lagerfeld say?
