Ralph Lauren to call time on Rugby

Collegiate brand will close in 2013

The Rugby line will lose its stripes in the new year, Ralph Lauren said during its second quarter results reporting today.

The preppy spin-off brand will close its ecommerce operation and 14 stores worldwide, including its London outpost, on 2 February 2013.

Ralph Lauren approved a plan to halt Rugby trading ‘in order to focus resources on higher growth’, the brand said in a statement.

Since launching in 2004, the brand has drawn a following for its tweedy collegiate staples, monogrammed rugby shirts, varsity jackets, and some pretty quirky brand events too.
