‘She’s got the look…alike’ was the title of his show.

‘This is an homage to all the pop stars of the eighties who have influenced fashion and my fashion with their look,’ said Gaultier on the star-spangled show notes.

‘This show is based on facts. Any similarity with real events or characters is purely non-coincidental.

’Expectations ran high, given he created Madonna’s most iconic look at the height of her powers. So, once the Kiss tribute band had been settled on the front row, the Jean Paul Gaultier cabaret-cum-pop-quizz began.

The designer kicked off with Grace Jones – the perfect poster girl for his signature tuxedos, as worn on her album Night Clubbing. Next up, to the strains of ‘Sweet Dreams’, Annie Lennox-alikes, the perfect character to carry off Gaultier’s masculine pinstripe trouser suits. Then the faux Madonnas – all red lips, shaggy perms, bangles, crucifixes – displaying the designer’s archive of corsetry, lace, net, his Breton striped tops and, naturally, his conical bras. Karlie Kloss made a turn as Boy George in a sweeping floral dress. Jourdan Dunn led the Sade section, that displayed more signature Gaultier with an elegant black raffia sheath or tailoring with panels of sheer mesh cut outs. And a breathy Jane Birkin, over the sound system, whispering ‘Je t’aime’, announced the arrival of the classic Gaultier mac – worn here, with blue sequinned tromp l'oeil palazzo pants. But that was where the fashion stopped.

Unless of course a one-legged jumpsuit, a la Ziggy Stardust is your thing, or a bubble-gum pink satin jacket and silver satin flares, as sported by Agnetha in Abba?

Amanda Lear, just about summed up the whole thing, when she stepped out in towering platforms on the arm of a muscled-up male model in a sheer black net body stocking. She whipped off her pink sequinned skirt to reveal very little beneath - a matching pink sequinned plunging swimsuit. Then came the dancers, who'd been entertaining us as the backdrop to the show. Their exit included flickflacks, cartwheels, and a summersault.

Fashion? Not really. Fun? On a Saturday night at Paris Fashion Week? Oh, yes!
