Ride the handbag carousel with Anya Hindmarch

Anya Hindmarch diverted and delighted her audience with a Victorian curiosity show of a presentation at London Fashion Week.

After her ‘Anyamatronics’ extravaganza last season, no one could doubt that Hindmarch knows how to put on a show. For her spring summer 2013 show, a rotating stage revealed different tableaux of moving bags as it revolved.

All the bags were situated in elaborate black-and-white illustrated sets. So in one ‘room’, a bathing beauty’s powdered wig grew and grew, opening to reveal one of the bags of the season. In another section, a Victorian strongman lifted a barbell with handbags suspended along its length. Third along, a couple sat dining at dishes of pear- and apple-shaped satin evening bags.

There were saucy details to the characters that kept the audience rapt—the dining couple played footsie, the strongman’s pants fell down as he lifted his bar.

The show went out with an effusion of butterfly confetti, as the impresario behind it all played an organ and waved from the upper tier. It was a charming respite that left everyone with a smile. And maybe even a yen for a new handbag.
