While we may be used to seeing Chanel creations worn by the likes of Diane Kruger, Blake Lively, Rachel Bilson and Alexa Chung on the red carpet, Karl Lagerfeld says, when it comes to couture, sometimes the celebrity association can be bad for business.

Speaking to the New York Times, he said: ‘It’s not a red-carpet opportunity. We’ve had clients cancel an order after seeing their dress on a celebrity.'

In a time when Hollywood starlets are routinely courted by design houses to wear their creations, this nugget from Karl is surprising - but understandable. When a piece of Chanel couture can take thousands of hours to make (with all of the intricate embroidery and beading), and cost tens (sometimes hundreds) of thousands of pounds, we can see how you might be miffed if some Pretty Young Thing was seen in it first.

This comes as the wrap up in Paris, leaving us dreaming about the world’s most gorgeous dressed and once again pondering the future of couture.

While some say that it is dying, with ateliers closing and production moving to the Far East, others say that it is having something of a renaissance – what with showing her first couture collection, Dolce & Gabbana announcing plans to do the same, and getting us excited about his vision for the brand.
