Far be it from Diane Von Furstenberg to contemplate retirement. Instead, the designer, CFDA chief and general dynamo continues to build her global empire through trips to visit stores and retail partners in China, Russia and Brazil.

And China, she says, is the country holding her attention most raptly.

‘[This] will probably be the China century,’ she told the Wall Street Journal when asked whether she thinks the next decade will be the China decade. ‘I was always fascinated with China, because I was born in Europe, and for us, China had this fascination and mystery....

‘I love being here, and really truly, if I were younger, I would live here.’

Von Furstenberg underlined her commitment to the Chinese market with an exhibition, called ‘Journey of a Dress’, shown in Beijing last year.

Although she insists that ‘my consumer is the same’ whether she’s from New York, Moscow or Shanghai, Von Furstenberg said there’s a very particular reason why designing for Chinese women is especially ‘nice’. Besides their spending power, that is.

‘[I]t is great to design for Chinese women, because they have great bodies,’ she said. ‘They are slim and have tiny waists, so it’s nice.’
