Stephen Jones's biggest hat challenge

Milliner Stephen Jones has created some of the most fantastical and memorable headgear in modern memory, for characters as diverse as Boy George and Princess Beatrice.

But his biggest challenge would be creating a hat for a woman he has yet to meet: Michelle Obama.

‘She’s an incredibly elegant and stylish lady,’ he says in a new video from Hint. ‘It would be a real challenge for me to make a hat for her that she adored.’

Jones, who studied at Central Saint Martins, also explains where he received his most useful career preparation.

‘[M]y real training came from my life on the nightclub scene,’ he said. ‘I had some extraordinary friends.... They were an incredible influence on me.’

Jones didn’t comment on Ascot, which this year introduced a stricter dress code, but he did say the best hats promote ‘a sense of lightness, a sense of freshness, a sense of fantasy too—because, really, it has to transport you from being who you really are into your dream figure.’
