Vuitton spots a winner with Kusama

Louis Vuitton is going dotty. The luxury fashion house has collaborated with Yayoi Kusama on a line of clothes and accessories strewn with the Japanese artist’s trademark polka dots.

The range of dot-bedecked shoes, bangles, handbags and silk dresses will enter Vuitton’s global stores in July, when a major Kusama retrospective moves from the Tate Modern to New York’s Whitney Museum.

A second tranche of product—this time, monogrammed leather goods decorated with Kusama’s ‘nerve’ drawings—will enter stores in October.

‘It’s really charming,’ Marc Jacobs told WWD of the collaboration. ‘It has the essence of the spirit of her work.’ The Louis Vuitton designer designated Vuitton’s monogram and Kusama’s dots as ‘both timeless and endless.’

Vuitton will support the collection (and the exhibition, which it sponsors) with an iPhone app devoted to the artist. Free of product and free to download, it invites users to customise their own pictures with Kusama themes.

The Kusama products will be available in limited editions. ‘We prefer for them to become collector’s items. Years after, people are so excited to have these bags,’ Vuitton CEO Yves Carcelle told the paper.
