In the newly created role, Hilfiger will guide contestants toward their ideal personal styles—a feat of styling producers hope will give the US talent programme a boost over rivals The X Factor, The Voice and American’s Got Talent.

‘I thought it would be exciting and challenging and different, a place where I could use all of my experience in fashion and music,’ Hilfiger told WWD.

‘It does give the show a different slant because none of the others have the fashion angle. If you look at what makes a star, it’s not only musical talent, it’s the complete package. And that includes image.... It’s the icing on the cake.’

Hilfiger will begin his involvement with the show by meeting each contestant in his studio and becoming acquainted with their musical and personal styles. He promises that he will steer each competitor toward clothes that fit his or her personality and genre, rather than outfitting every singer in Hilfiger goods.

‘There are different sets of talent and certainly a country singer will not want to dress like a punk rocker. It will be up to me to help them determine what their image should be,’ he said. ‘Maybe one of the contestants should be in French designer clothes and one should be in Western gear. I think people with great style mix it up, so I would be remiss in thinking I could dress them in one brand.’

Shame that Simon Cowell and his t-shirts have escaped Hilfiger’s scrutiny, isn’t it?
