Alberta Ferretti's collection at Milan fashion week was every shopper's eveningwear dream. Beautiful, romantic gowns, hugging the torso, flaring from the hip... and in black. Perhaps having ticked off bold colour last season, perhaps looking at a season full of vivid tones and print that didn't sell too well, there seems to be a prevalent trend for playing it safe. And when we say safe, we actually mean desirable in real terms.

Ferretti's sequence of black gowns were stunning. Like Gucci's before it, acting as a wish list for an audience whose only intended statement is 'don't I look gorgeous?'. It wasn't all black - there was a shot of scarlet and a rich purple, but really, our default dress is a little black one, and bravo to Ferretti for giving the public what it wants.
