Modern Times for Richard Nicoll

It's Modern Times for Richard Nicoll, the title of his autumn winter 2012 collection and an apt reflection of both his artistic direction and attitude to presenting his craft.

This season he decided to show an intimate presentation instead of a catwalk show. "I was fed up with the pace, it was hugely expensive and this is much more accessible" he told us. So a studio photo shoot it was, where guests witnessed the designer's look book images being created complete with posing models and snapping photographer while getting to touch the clothes and chat to Nicoll.

"I referenced industrial-wear and industrial colours to merge with workwear. This is a uniform" he said of the orange silk crepe pleated skirt, orange and rust two-tone maxi and herringbone dress with blue pleats as he dashed to and from tweaking the model's hemline.

This action-filled presentation style suits Nicoll and sets his clothes off brilliantly. Alexa Chung was in pawing the fabrics. With a new investor on board, Nicoll is able to recruit more production staff and roll these shows out globally - four are planned this year hitting LA and Hong Kong. He's also produced a white leather tote for Vodafone that charges your mobile dans le sac. Modern times indeed.
