Wild Things and Yetis the Mulberry Way

The children’s story Where the Wild Things Are was Emma Hill's inspiration for today's Mulberry autumn winter 2012 collection. And the book’s wild beast Carol loomed from the walls of Claridge’s ballroom.

To the tune of Scary Monsters and Wild One, Michelle Williams, Elizabeth Olsen, Olivia Palermo, Michelle Dockery and Laura Carmichael from Downton Abbey bedded down on the fur-lined benches to watch Carol’s Yeti coat styled the Mulberry way.

Also in attendance was Lana del Rey just an hour after the news was announced that she was the proud benefactor of a Mulberry bag of her own, named the Del Rey. The Del Rey looks a bit like the Bayswater but smaller with gold hardwear and studs. Chatting to del Rey about her style backstage she said “I playfully call it Ghetto Monégasque”, which explains the bling meets prim. Emma Hill chose del Rey after obsessing over the film for track Video Games, “the first one, not the one they had to re-cut for legal reasons” she adds, “we’re not looking to do a bag for someone each season but I felt Lana’s sensibilities had a connection with the label and I just had to meet her”.

Back to the clothes. Tim Walker’s film Lost Explorer and boarding school girls mixed with Navaho references, Eskimos, “eclectic, very textural” Hill notes. That’s a fair few things in the mix, but the Mulberry girl can take a lot thrown at her and still look artfully pulled together.

Aztec zig-zags and tie-dye tiger prints covered coats and below-the-knee skirts, supersized sheepskin shrouded delicate lace slips underneath in a play on proportions. That zig-zag print finds its way on to a reformed Alexa bag and Maisie, a newby to the fold, is a stripped-back number using heat-moulded technology to give a trompe l’oeil effect.

Chatting to Elizabeth Olsen backstage, she claimed to be obsessed with British style, "my stylist is British, Cher Coulter, and I personally prefer British magazines. But I know nothing about London, this is only my second time here. I'm hoping to get to a flea market later". While Michelle Williams mentioned that if she had a Mulberry bag namesake “it would need to have lots of pockets and be very large”. Let’s hope we’re wearing the Michelle come spring.
