Milan is its usual home, and its design heart lies in typically Italian glitz and humour. But on UK soil, it suddenly strikes as being remarkably British too.

Those photographic painted lips, the powdery shades on pearl collared prom dresses and patchwork lace reminded us of Mulberry and Luella’s London girl. The type that throws a slogan tee (“Smile, kiss, eat...” in this case) over some 60s silk Capri pants and borrows Granny’s homespun knit to wear over a hot pink skirt. Sound familiar? Right on cue, there’s Alexa Chung, the protagonist of that style, sitting front row and tweeting “Moschino Cheap and Chic killing it. So so good!! 60s dreammmmmm”. Fully expect to see Ms Chung in the orange collared sequin dress with fur hemline and kitten heels before the week is out.

“Make up your life! And mash up your clothes!” was the title of the show. Italians do love exclamation marks. And with Cheap & Chic’s autumn winter 2012 collection, creative director Rossella Jardini has managed to merge the hotch potch London style that shouldn’t work but really does. Greeting guests after the show Jardini added that Queen Elizabeth was also an inspiration which we’ll pin on the blush, drop-waist coat dress with fur collar. Moschino in London, long may she reign.
