Latest show: Altuzarra

If it’s a coat you’re after next season then Joseph Altuzarra is your man.

That may be a sweeping statement – especially considering the fact that this is only the second autumn / winter 2012 show that I’ve seen at New York fashion week – but still, I can guarantee his is a name you should look for in the coat department.

Be it a firm-shouldered, skinny-armed, knee-length liquorice leather coat, a shearling boasting a gargantuan bubbly fur collar or a navy pea coat with gold military buttons. And even if you are not Altuzarra Woman – she with the penchant for showing her nipped-in waist, wearing thigh-high leather booties and draping herself in a good deal of fox– you will, I guarantee, still find a good coat.

This season, Altuzarra hung his coats - and the rest - to a Moroccan theme. There were colourful rugs on the floor, for starters, and more gold coins jangling from hems of skirts and jackets than you could shake a hookah pipe at. But the ethnicity never detracted from the strong Altuzarra shapes and certainly brought home his skill at combining fiercely sexy womanhood with more gentle hand-crafted pieces - which is quite a feat when you think about it.

In the mix, too, was some fine knitwear. One particular jumper featuring the heads of two stallions will certainly be an editorial hit, if not a big seller too. Could this be the start of a strong equestrian theme for autumn / winter 2012? Who knows. But the military vibe was ever present – and very lovely it looked too.
