Couture latest: Elie Saab

Elie Saab’s candyfloss vision of femininity wafted onto the couture catwalk Wednesday afternoon in a profusion of bows, crystals and pastel hues.

The Lebanese couturier’s designs hewed to a macaron-box palette, moving from bridal whites through seafoam greens, peaches, sherbet lemons, baby blues and sugar pinks. All came diaphanous as sighs and remarkably embellished. Layered lace, beading and sequinned patterns seemed light rather than overwhelming.

If it veered a bit Barbie by the end, with the Dream House-ready, pink-accented bridal gown, that’s all part of the package. Clients and stars look to Saab to fulfil fairytale dreams for their dressiest moments. Berenice Bejo, the star of The Artist nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, wore two Saab designs during the week of the Golden Globes. She tracked every couture design from the front row, as silent as her Artist character Peppy Miller at all the swathes of silk.

Expect to see the story that started on this catwalk culminate with many happy starlets at the Oscars.
