Film fans rejoice: Sofia Coppola is in negotiations to direct a new version of The Little Mermaid.
According to Deadline.com, the Lost in Translation and Virgin Suicides director is to replace Joe Wright at the helm of the Universal Pictures/Working Title production.
The adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 fairytale is based on a script by Edward Scissorhands writer Caroline Thompson, so don’t bet on Under the Sea and any of the other well-known tracks from the Disney version being featured. (We can but hope.)
Though Coppola's most recent film, The Bling Ring, was towards the more light-hearted end of the Coppola spectrum, this is a big move in direction towards a young audience. And everyone at ELLE. Because who isn't Team Ariel?
