There should be leather, black jersey, a thumping soundtrack. There should be Erin Wasson and Kanye West in the front row. There should be tricky, but nonetheless desirable, shoes. AW11 ticked every one of these boxes. But it also introduced something new to the equation: luxury. Of course, this being an Alexander Wang show, it wasn’t too obvious: fur-trimmed shoes (this is already looking like an early season trend), fur-trimmed sunglasses (let’s hope not) and, most importantly, fantastic outerwear in fantastically elaborate fabrics – quilted leather ponchos with matching boots, heavy cashmere sweaters with thickly ribbed sleeves that fell into silk at the hem, wool boucle blazers with lurex and leather panelling. There were some other key pieces, of course: skinny lurex trousers (this is another NYC trend), shiny silver shoes, floor-length satin skirts slashed into ribbons. But above all, this was a collection that emphasised coats and jackets. Add them to your next season wish list now.
