We shot with Kai Z Feng, who’s one of our big cover photographers, in LA, because Amanda was in LA. We wanted to do something that was quite ‘summer’, because it was our June issue. Amanda feels quite summer to me.

The whole idea was denim, which is a very classic ELLE girl – the cool denim girl. We wanted to somehow link that into her personality, which I felt was very Californian, slightly bohemian. Casual.

I wanted to do the whole high-waisted denim thing on her because I feel that’s very retro in way and also, she’s got the most brilliant body, so I thought that would work on her.

We mixed it in with the whole girl thing – sort of an extension of her style, but obviously a bit more luxe-y and put together.

We had these amazing high-waisted jeans – everyone on the shoot wanted a pair after we put them on her – and also these fantastic pieces from Marant, some amazing leather, which had a bit of a Navajo feel to it, and fantastic hats from Maison Michel to give that whole 70s vibe to it. Also a really beautiful polka dot dress.

It was more like we were wardrobing her, rather than reinventing her.

The shot that made the cover really encompassed that whole carefree, Californian summer sexiness, and it really encapsulated her personality. She’s a really beautiful girl and she’s very naturally sexy.

She loved all the clothes. It’s always great when you work with somebody who just wants to buy all the clothes afterwards.
