For the second season has enlisted Egyptian jewellery label, Azza Fahmy, to conjour pieces to compliment his autumn/winter 2014 collection. As the stellar Star pieces drop in stores, we caught up with Amina Ghali, designer and daughter of the Azza Fahmy, to talk about the collaboration.
How would you describe the Azza Fahmy girl?
Shes looking for a unique piece but also something that stands out. She also appreciates craftsmanship and preserving time-honoured techniques because thats what our brand is all about.
How did the collaboration with Matthew Williamson come about?
We loved his work and the way he designs so we approached him. We met up in his office in London and brainstormed, he presented his collection to us and we went back to Cairo and put together ideas.
Why do you love working with him?
Its very straightforward with him, theres a lot of synergy between our labels. This season we each put together mood boards but when we compared them they were almost exactly the same!
Youve grown up in a family full of jewellery designers so its clearly part of your heritage but what is it that you really love about it?
Everything about jewellery excited me from a very young age. A piece of jewellery can really change your wardrobe. Put one on and, bang, you look stunning. You can also tell a lot about person through what they wear, their personality.
Do you wear any jewellery aside from the pieces that you design yourself?
I wear both. I have a lot from our brand as well as some from Lara Bohinc. I also wear a lot of antique pieces, some Ive inherited and others Ive collected with my mother. I love to look at them and study their history and techniques when Im putting the collection together.
What would you be doing if you werent designing jewellery?
Definitely something art related. Fashion or photography or painting.
