Sir Bob reveals charity single will tackle Ebola

'Did you watch The X Factor on Sunday?' is a common question asked on a Monday morning. But this week, it didn't involve what Cheryl wore, who was lipsyncing, or who was booted out. Because this weekend, Band Aid 30 premiered the new cover of Do They Know It's Christmas?

Speaking on BBC1 breakfast to Nick Grimshaw this morning, Bob Geldof (the organiser behind the original 1984 hit) described the experience as a 'little bit of pop history'. Artists taking part include Emeli Sandé, Bono, Rita Ora, One Direction, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding, Chris Martin, Elbow, Seal, Jessie Ware, Fuse, Sinead O'Connor, Angelique Jidjo, Olly Murs, Paloma Faith, Queen's drummer Roger Taylor, Clean Bandit and Foals.

This year the money raised will be used to tackle the Ebola outbreak, which has killed more than 5,000 people.

After the music video was aired on The X Factor, the fundraising phone line opened. Within in four minutes, the charity had already raised over £1m. iTunes waived its usual 30% cut of profits, and the British government has made it tax free.

With updated lyrics, this will also go around the world – former supermodel Carla Bruni will record a French version.
