How to follow BAFTA, ELLE Style Awards and London Fashion Week? The BRIT awards 2014 certainly had its work cut out, even if it did have Beyonce and Katy Perry on the bill.
On the red carpet, there was fun and dare in place of groomed sophistication, like Jessie Js embellished Julian Macdonald catsuit, which she teamed with a pastel lip. But while the scruffy rock icons of old were long forgotten - in their place, the 1D boys in Dolce & Gabanna suits - the traditional BRIT awards cheek and swagger come to the fore as the night wore on.
As awards were administered Lorde and Ellie Goulding among them it was the unscripted moments we remembered most: like Grimmy sharing a stage kiss with host James Corden, and Harry Styles admitting he was lost in the toilets when his band rushed to collect the award for Best British Act. And then, surprise-guest, Kate Moss, appearing onstage to collect David Bowies Best Male award. Dave had sent her especially, like one style icon ordaining another. And, Kate being Kate, she did so dressed in one of his Ziggy Stardust-era costumes. 'In Japanese myth, the rabbits on my old costume that Kates wearing actually live on the moon, Kate comes from Venus and I'm from Mars, ran the acceptance speech.
Still, the biggest twist of the night came in the shape of Alexa Chung's ex, Alex Turner, as he accepted his bands second award of the evening. Any fear that his comment about rocknroll beating through the sludge was too thinly-veiled was alleviated when he pointedly dropped his microphone muttering invoice me as he did so. Cringing yet? Good. Thats the BRITs we remember.
