David Beckham watched his wife Victoria collect the British Fashion Award for Brand of the Year on Monday night – was he quietly harbouring ambitions to win one of his own next year?

This week it was confirmed that the former footballer has inked a licensing deal with Global Brands, in tandem with his business partner (and former Spice Girls manager) Simon Fuller, with a view to launching as-yet unspecified new products.

WWD reported in April that Beckham was in talks with various companies – including Li & Fung (which manages distribution for brands including Calvin Klein, Dockers, Tommy Hilfiger) – about potentially launching a sportswear collection.

But at a press conference on Wednesday, Global Brands chief executive officer Bruce Rockowitz revealed that the ambitions for their partnership overreach that hugely.

‘Creating a sportswear or underwear line with David would be great, but we want to do more,’ Rockowitz said at a press conference about the venture on Wednesday.

He added: ‘It’s a much bigger concept than any one brand. We’re building a company, a partnership, and launching today to build scalable brands globally around iconic stars in sports and entertainment.

‘It’s a very encompassing partnership around David as well as some other iconic superstars that we’re bringing in. David has a list, but because we’re a public company, we really can’t divulge that right now.

‘We can’t announce and talk about it until it’s final. At this moment nothing is final.’
