David Beckham has signed a deal to play for elite European club Paris Saint Germain, it has been confirmed – opening up a whole world of potential fashion opportunities for his designer wife and ELLE’s March cover girl, Victoria Beckham.

The family relocated to the UK from LA, where they had been living since David signed for LA Galaxy in 2007, early this year. In recent weeks, speculation about David’s footballing future has hit fever pitch when he was spotted supporting eldest son Brooklyn Beckham during a youth trial at Chelsea and photographed in an Arsenal shirt as he trained with the team in a bid to maintain his fitness.

This morning, however, he was flown to Paris for a medical ahead of a press conference in which he announced that he has signed a five-month contract with PSG.

Looking as dapper as ever in sharp tailoring, he revealed to the assembled press that not only would he be making the move, but he would be donating all the proceeds of it to charity. His fee is reported to be in the region of £150,000 a week.

'We've decided on something that's quite unique,' he said. 'Throughout this time now I won't receive any salary: we've decided my salary will go towards a local children's charity in Paris, and that's one of the things we're very excited and proud to do.

'It's something I'm not sure has been done before, but I'm passionate about children and the charity, so we came together and it's something special.'

And just when we thought we couldn't love him any more...

In addition to getting David back into the prestigious European leagues, closer ties with Paris will be a boon for Victoria, whose own-name fashion label is showing impressive growth internationally. As exclusively revealed by ELLE yesterday, she is to launch Icon, a new capsule collection of dresses that will be available online from February exclusively via victoriabeckham.com.

David confirmed during the press conference, however, that she and their four children would not be relocating to the French capital. Rather, they will stay in London, 'because the children go to school there now'.

Victoria has since released a statement, which reads: 'Myself and the children are incredibly proud and supportive of David and we are excited about spending time as a family in Paris over the coming weeks. We are passionate about supporting children's charities and donating to a local children's charity in Paris is something we are delighted to do.'
