After a tough few years on the British High Street, a glimmer of good news. In the wake of an announcement of 4.2 per cent pre-tax profits, the department store Debenhams has revealed it will open 17 new stores in the UK which will bring 1,700 jobs, and a further 20 new stores opening internationally.
A spokesperson for the store told ELLE, ‘New designers, stronger marketing and successful expansion overseas has helped Debenhams to increase market share.’ They particularly emphasised the role that the ground-breaking Designers at Debenhams range has played in the success, citing ‘a strong team of leading designers, such as Jenny Packham, Jonathan Saunders, Henry Holland, Julien MacDonald, Preen and Marios Schwab, producing catwalk clothes at affordable prices.'
And that’s not all. ELLE can reveal that next to enter a collaboration with Debenhams will be Markus Lupfer. He’s teaming up with TV presenter Donna Air to launch ‘donna & markus by markus lupfer’, available exclusively in Debenhams from 26 November.
The range will be a capsule collection of knitwear, sweatshirts, t-shirts and leggings – for girls aged four-14. Yes, that's right: kids only. What do you want to bet that in November you'll be able to spot a lot of grown women in Debenhams trying to squeeze into age 14 jumpers?
