Lincoln Center or Studio 54? For a few minutes at Diane Von Furstenberg’s New York Fashion Week show, it was hard to tell. The designer transported her audience back to the golden age of disco with a show of her greatest hits, revamped and refreshed for 2013.

As a Donna Summer song played, Cara Delevingne (opening another show—another one!) sashayed onto the runway in a slithery, optical-printed silk-jersey wrap dress. DVF’s breakthrough garment from the ‘70s appeared repeatedly in the lineup. It was best in a black, tux-like version, with a frond-like leather design adorning the neckline.

Pyjama-silk jumpsuits and a rainbow of metallic lame pieces—a copper shirt with gold trousers, silvery pink trousers, a gold croc-embossed skirt—gleamed on by. Sometimes the references got a little literal (not that we didn’t love Lindsey Wixson in the merlot velvet dress over wide-legged trousers). But it was always wearable, feminine, and a helluva lot of fun to watch.

It was DVF’s first season without a second set of hands acting as creative director, and as she took her customary lap around the runway, she looked overcome. Forty years in the business, and adulation still gets to her. If that’s not deserving of a disco boogie, we don’t know what is.
