Elle Fanning is only twelve, but her press-junket wardrobe is enough to make a grown woman weep. In the past few days, she has worn a golden Rodarte dress with Nicholas Kirkwood for Rodarte 5 inch platforms, a custom Marc Jacobs Resort frock with matching metallic mary-janes, a silvery Azzaro, and a Valentino couture- with matching Valentino shoes. She's also been seen in an exquisite fluffy Marchesa, and worn a mix of Chanel and Valentino couture in recent interviews.
At eight, an age when most of us were still being dressed by our mothers, Elle Fanning was attending premieres for films starring herself and her sister in an array of high end outfits. But it's at her appearances to promote Somewhere, that she has displayed a degree of fashion nous way beyond her years; not to mention an ability to walk in vertiginous Kirkwoods that many will never muster. Stephen Dorff has complained that the twelve year old is growing up too quickly- (in height, at least)- commenting this week that "she’s just growing too tall. I’m not the tallest guy, and she’s like 6 feet tall in heels...I feel like Mini-Me sometimes on the red carpet with her.”
But whilst her outfits are fashion forward, they're rarely inappropriate, and never revealing. Fanning has talked in several interviews about her love of clothes, saying last year "I love fashion, I have sketches in a book, like I sketch clothes all the time, like if I weren’t acting that’s what I’d do." In the meantime, her red carpet appearances are providing a creative outlet for her; and a highly unrealistic Christmas wish list for twelve year old girls on both sides of the Atlantic.
