At a time when women designers are having quite the fashion moment thanks to their effortlessly cool, wearable designs – Phoebe Philo, Isabel Marant, Stella McCartney, Hannah Mac Gibbon – Hannah is capturing the mood. ‘I suppose I design for myself,’ she says, ‘I don’t think you can help it when you’re a woman designing for other women. I wear a lot of the pieces but I’ll leave Forence to run around in the jumpsuits.’ That’s Florence ‘The Machine’ Welch of course, who can regularly be spotted decked out in Hannah’s creations. And she’s not the only music star that’s a fan – Marina and the Diamonds also wear the label, and last year’s autumn collection was inspired by, and championed by, uber cool girl group Ipso Facto.
This season Hannah is showing on-schedule for the first time, a sure sign that her star is rising. ‘It’s so nerve racking,’ she admits. She’s showing at the same time as Felder Felder and Jean Pierre Braganza which she says ‘…doesn’t really take the pressure off. But the London Fashion Week schedule is so packed that there’s no way that the everyone can get to everything so hopefully, as there’s three of us at the same time, we’ll get a good audience.’
So what to expect from the latest collection? ‘Well I’ve been looking a lot at body modification and I’m always inspired by Grace Jones and Tilda Swinton. And will there be plenty of the strong black pieces that have become her signature? ‘Well the blue I used last season was really well received but I think it’s really important to stay true to your aesthetic and vision and mine’s a really minimalist palette.’ So no rainbow brights then. We can’t wait to see it.
