Jean Paul Gaultier
ran rampant over the pages of Libération yesterday, using his one-day term as guest editor to restyle the French newspapers staffers in outfits concocted from recycled issues.
The staffers sat for a series of portraits in the paper reproductions of famous Gaultier outfits, cone bra included. But Gaultier saved the cover for himself. He appears wearing a cape-like cascade of newspapers over his arm. Inside, he appears in a newsprint mohawk.
Last year, the paper invited Karl Lagerfeld to serve as guest editor. He relished the role, personally illustrating the cover (a self-portrait, natch) and news items about the war in Afghanistan and the World Cup.
Gaultiers editorial takeover was timed to publicise a major career retrospective at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk opens this Friday.
