While Tom Ford's tenure at YSL has become legendary amongst the fashion industry, winning him a collection of dedicated followers, it seems that not everyone was thrilled by his creative efforts. His biggest critic? Yves Saint Laurent himself.
Tom sat down with CNN this week and revealed that the late designer penned pages of letters to him that were not exactly encouraging. Apparently Yves was initially supportive of the Gucci Group's buy-out of his label and Tom's involvement ('He loved the fact that we were buying the company and he loved the fact that I was designing the company. He'd been very complimentary of my work at Gucci, we had dinner a few times and my first collection I had him up to show him' says Tom).
But when the label once more started to go stellar his attitude changed. 'I have letters that he wrote to me about it, '13 minutes on the runway you've destroyed 40 years of my career'. I'm really happy I have them, they're written in his own hand, pages,' reveals Tom. 'When I'm 85 maybe I'll put them into a book if anyone's interested.'
