Meadham Kirchhoff's Secret Garden

Designers Edward Meadham and Ben Kirchhoff collaborated with Wild at Heart to create the technicolour environment. They made early-morning ventures to the Covent Garden Flower Market, chose objects to place in flower pots, selected silk ribbons, arranged bouquets—even spray-painted individual blooms and doused them in glitter. The result is an Alice in Wonderland-style garden, filled with fluoro vases and sparkling stems.

‘We’ve been painting pots and jars for about a month,’ Meadham said. ‘We worked very hard on the florist... much in the same way we do for a show.’

The two designers also created sets of rings and bangles for the Secret Store. These are packed into a heart-shaped box with floral embroidery—an exact replica of a jewellery box owned by Courtney Love that appeared on the cover of Nirvana’s ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ single. The baubles will sit alongside jewelled headpieces from Nasir Mazhar, velvet wedges from Michael Van Der Ham, and revived Unique archive pieces for the Secret Store’s two-week duration.

Meadham and Kirchhoff say they aren’t gardeners themselves (‘I have to make do with potted plants and surrounding myself with fresh flowers that I pick,’ Kirchhoff says), but they regularly employ floral imagery in their shows. Most recently, they gifted front rowers at their A/W ’11 show with purple irises and laid wilted bouquets at the feet of their shrine-like catwalk installations.
