The opening of the Cannes Film Festival may be days away, but Karl Lagerfeld rolled out the dove grey carpet for a Chanel Cruise show with enough drama and elegance to trump the starriest premiere.
Blake Lively, Alexa Chung, Rachel Bilson, Clémence Poésy and Vanessa Paradis attended the show at Cap dAntibes storied Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, providing as much interest and variety as the fashion itself. Lively wore a fitted midnight-blue sequinned blazer with the briefest of miniskirts, whilst Alexa opted for a powder pink midi-dress with a feather-like hem.
All of the above made way for a seafront catwalk just before sunset, taking their seats alongside the grey catwalk at umbrella-shaded bistro tables.
And the clothes? The show opened with an amuse-bouche of lemon sorbet and lavender macaroon suits before giving way to crisp black-and-white swimsuits shown the Chanel way: with little tweed blazers, swags of pearls or fingerless elbow-length gloves.
Evening-wear took its cues from the 30s, with abstracted camellia and tweed prints playing across bias-cut gowns. Were less convinced by Lagerfelds tango thong shoes, but this is a collection ready for the picking by Riviera-dwellers and women who wear diamonds for their daily swim.
