At long last... J.Crew, the US brand beloved of Michelle Obama
andwell, everyone we can think ofis coming to the UK.
J.Crew will open its figurative doors to international customers by extending its online offering to the UK rather than building brick-and-mortar stores, group chief Mickey Drexler said in an interview with Bloomberg TV.
We are an American brand, but I find most brands today are actually worldwide, Drexler said. We just have huge demand overseas. So were not running. Were walking, were studying right now.
The brand will make its UK debut in late summer or early fall, the brand confirmed.
J.Crew, famed for its perfect tissue tees, breezy party wear and Italian shoes (and jewellery, and chinos, and wedding dresses, etc.), tiptoed into the UK market last May as a featured brand on Net-A-Porter. A J.Crew spokesperson called the response to the tightly edited offering fantastic.
Obviously there is a clear demand for J.Crew in the UK, so we knew it was time that we made everything thats featured on our website in the US available to our UK customers, the representative said.
No word on pricing yet, but we imagine that the direct-to-consumer nature of the new venture can only mean UK prices will hew more closely to what US customers pay. (So long, annoying mark-up.)
And what about opening stores after a successful online rollout?
We would love to at some point. Were going to focus on online first.
