Stiff sleeveless tunics with jewel shoulder padding and tight cigarette pants, oversized spongy Peter Pan collars on tweedy dresses and short, structured capes with high-waisted trousers - it spoke to the moneyed and all those aspiring to be. Scalloped edges fanned across cocktail dresses, red fur bands striped around coats and flat patent pumps looks as elegant as the stiletto boots.

The finale looks with couture-shaped skirts followed the path set by Raf Simons at last season's Jil Sander show, but this time not dressed down for daywear (heaven forbid) but ramped up for black tie. With a new Paris store just unveiled, Valli will find more clients at his door in no time.
